After a long and tiresome wait we finally have a competition for teams that are dedicated but haven’t had the chance to shine. Reality Gaming have gone to great lengths to create this wonderful Amateur competition, and at a perfect time! With the next season of cevo a while away this is the perfect chance for some of these relatively unknown teams to show us what they are made of. Many teams in this competition need no introduction and have been playing together for sometime, bur for some others this is the stepping stone into bigger and better things. Keep an eye out as week by week we will see some huge upsets and watch as some fresh players show us their talent. It is going to be a turbulent ride for most of the teams and players. This is going to be one exciting and volatile competition and we will be here every step of the way to try and predict the unpredictable!

.

This being the first match of the season is going to make it quite hard to predict and gauge how the teams play, strong points, weak points, better maps etc, so bear with me.

Digital Mind vs. Pinnacle - Sunday 25th May - 7:30

.

Digital Mind

Lineup: jsd tasker ihs semz machete pudge Loki

.

Digital Mind, the guys who have been screaming for a shot at the big time, and this is their chance to prove to us their worth. They claim to be ready for cevo intermediate; this is going to be a critical match for Digital Mind. Both Digital Mind and Pinnacle are possible contenders for next season’s cevo intermediate, this being said, they are going to want to show the community that they are ready. Digital Mind’s recent pick up of machete is going to prove valuable this match if he gets down and plays with his team, if not watch as his rage can really pull them down. Expect both teams to be pracced up heavily, watch this match go down to the wire, round for round.

.

Pinnacle

Lineup: hexadecimaL Nak Yekim iRection Bing k0tSo shauNske

.

Pinnacle, this team has been here a few times are no strangers to competitions, and the source scene. These guys were unluckily denied a shot at last season’s cevo but have stayed together, and are still going strong today. Their win of the last AOGN competition will give this team the mental edge over some of the new comers. Pinnacle has all the teamwork and chemistry of some intermediate teams and will use this to their advantage as they put up a huge fight against Digital Mind. Watch for the solid teamwork, consistent fragging, and bing’s ninjas. To win this one against Digital Mind it is crucial that their caller keeps a cool head and capitalized on their Terrorist Half with solid picks and fakes.

.

Score Prediction: 16-14 Pinnacle’s way.

.

StipeGT vs. Subversion - Thursday 29th May - 9:00

.

StipeGT

Lineup: F1G ThrillaKilla rotoplooker A||uSion swi$$

.

StipeGT have been together for a long time and have considerably more experience than subversion with their longevity and being in the source scene for longer. However, this can only get them so far, subversion is still a threat as is any team at this stage of the competition. Watch for allusion and thrillakilla to bring the majority of the frags for StipeGT and teamwork and chemistry outclasses the relatively young team.

.

Subversion

Lineup: NoWaY McRutch osprey scar constance rabbitherun t3k

.

Subversion is a good example of a committed team. These guys constantly practice, are always keen to get better, and learn new things. It is this drive to get better that I have seen from Subversion that will make them a good team in a short time. They are a consistent and a fine team at the moment, but wait till the later stages of this season as we will see a much improved team. This match against StipeGT is going to be a tough one as StipeGT has more experience but Subversion will take a lot away from the match and improve greatly.

.

Score Prediction: 16-10 in StipeGT’s favor.

.

.

Exposure vs. Symphony - Monday 26th May - 7:30

Exposure

Lineup: falcz Fattat ARiES Js Jaffa Darkstar

.

Exposure has been around for a while, but has been rather stagnant because of the very few competitions at the moment, unless you enjoy Gamearena and Gamespace. Their biggest weakness is that they have less experience in competitions, where the pressure plays a significant role and can really change their in game style. This is going to be a good learning experience for Exposure and will set them up nicely for future competitions and matches. This match will be a tough one for this team, and every round is going to be a fight till the last second. Hopefully exposure pulls out something huge and surprises us all, but this is most unlikely.

.

Symphony

Lineup: clinto khepera m1ndee pinto swift tuska vex

.

What needs to be said about these guys? After being the subject of a lot of forum discussion; everyone has heard of this team. The recent addition of tuska to the lineup means that they currently have two cevo intermediate players in their lineup. This means that only one or the other can play come match time. These guys are the top3 predicted favorites will most likely take this match with comfort as exposure are a team without that experience that is ever so crucial in those crunch times.

.

Score Prediction: 16-6 to Symphony.

.

.

Revelations vs. XG - Monday 26th May - 9:00

.

Revelations

Lineup: Mazerk1St FeaRMEKz Contaminated ramir3z_ Suss^Eh DementedDucky

.

This team has had some good results, and has been together for a while; they are basically a concept remake, and have had a core four for a long time. The addition of Demented Ducky will only help this team grow; he is a big fragger and being ex-tomatofamily he will bring some experience and that extra edge to this team. Watch for FeaRMEKz to dominate online and bring some huge plays for Revelations.

.

XtremeGaming

Lineup: xquizD illuminate jtekz nemya gwiz

.

XtremeGaming, these guys are just initial gaming renamed. They are very stable team and have held the same lineup for a fair while. In scrims these guys play very well and are able to take it to the best. The most important thing for XtremeGaming is that they can transfer this performance in scrims to a competition match. A lot of people will be surprised if they don’t perform to what they do in scrims, but after a few matches they will be used to the atmosphere in a ladder match.

.

Score Prediction: 16-13 to Revelations.

.

.

Terrafirma vs. StyleFX - Tuesday 27th May - 7:30

Terrafirma

Lineup: b-rex PuDu relix schex CaZzA DaVo aiya_au Hostile

.

Terrafirma, most of these guys played with me in my very early stages of source and in my view could be the dark horse of the competition. I can see many teams underestimating Terrafirma and paying for the consequences later. These guys have been playing together for a while but just haven’t really taken it that seriously yet, so this will be a big learning experience for this team. Watch as StyleFX underestimate Terrafirma, losing some rounds because of this ignorance.

.

StyleFX

Lineup: Doe Yumcha Bokchoi kto iskra rex nazteck

.

Having recently won a Melbourne Lan the confidence would be soaring with StyleFX, but is that going to help this team or be their biggest problem? I can see this match going either very well for StyleFX taking the win without having too much of a problem. However, the thing that could go wrong is, if Terrafirma start putting some rounds on the board and get some momentum, we could see StyleFX fall apart mid game and just lose that drive for a win.

.

Score Prediction: 16-9 to StyleFX.

.

.

teamENiGMA vs. Exope - Tuesday 27th May - 9:00

Sources tell me that Exope have disbanded.

.

teamENiGMA

Lineup: cxbyo cHs Aceh Superbeast Mykro storm1N

.

Exope

Lineup: kambo Link Godzilla ubrlrd Gunner

.

Score Prediction: 16-0 forfeit win to enigma.

.

.

Injected vs. ColtGaming - Wednesday 28th May - 7:30

.

Injected

Lineup: flukeartist suprez joel arse drip rocketboy

.

This team is either going to go really well this season or get absolutely stomped by the competition. Their style of play is unique and is frustrating to play against because of the constant pushing. Due to this, their constant pushing as counter-terrorists could leave them very open to a team that is just going to sit back and let them walk into AK-47’s. The question is, when the match gets serious will these guys keep playing like they do in scrims? Will they push the area as confident or will they sit back and not play like they normally do? It is that mindset that could really damage Injected.

.

ColtGaming

Lineup: martin shamp emanueL rjay ramb0 aki sai

.

ColtGaming, these guys could either be another big surprise team or a flop. They seem to banter like they are the best so I guess we will see what they can bring to this competition. Their success this competition will depend on if they can hold a steady lineup and also if ramb0 can do it with the anti-cheat client working. This could be a good chance for ramb0 to clear his plate, but if he doesn’t do it watch as the banter comes back to get ColtGaming.

.

Score Prediction: 16-13 to Injected.

.

.

Vertex vs. FiNEST - Wednesday 28th May - 9:00

.

Vertex

Lineup: Cloud Laes Godz Gift Pezzo Nicomaniac

.

These guys are another team that have been together for a long time, but because of the lack of competitions haven’t really had the chance to shine. Their longevity and stability has given this team some good chemistry and a good base for improvement. This season for Vertex will be a tough one, but they are going to learn a lot from it and improve very quickly.

.

FiNEST

Lineup: Matto prcsnn patties oktober m37h

.

FiNEST, these guys are a new Melbourne Lan team to the scene and have been given a great shot at playing RG-a. Personally I have never seen any of the players in this team play, with or against. So these guys are a team that I don’t really have any gauge on how they will perform, but as the season goes on I expect these guys to pull out some solid wins and progress as a team.

Score Prediction: 16-11 win to Vertex.

.
Exile 5
.
Lineup:

  • Rhys “reno” Downham (c)
  • Damien “vrostien” Honey
  • Christian “digz” Cheung
  • Michael “mike” Hall
  • Josh “Kermit” Evans
  • Reserve: John “johnnyc” Christides

1st Regular Season - Wins:12 Losses:3 Rounds Won:197 Rounds Lost:146
.
History:
Remnants of the old Advantage team that has been at the forefront of Australian CS:S for over a year now, Exile5 boasts a new talented lineup that saw them top the league during the regular season and advance undefeated through the playoffs to the grand final. A strong and experienced lineup, only 3 members (reno, vrostien, digz) of the WGT 07 winning lineup remain in the teams core5. The addition of Kermit and Mike have added a lot of talent and experience into the lineup that has seen it grow even stronger as the CEVO season progressed. Coming from a season in CEVO-Intermediate last season, due to time arrangements not allowing them to compete in Professional, this team have showed that they are up there with the best in Australia online and at LAN.

.
Their strong performance in this CEVO competition was matched by an equally strong performance at the Anything Interactive National Cup, where the team finished 4th. This team really battles for their wins and makes teams work hard to beat them. Their biggest win of the season was last week’s semi final victory over Sequential Gaming (16-7) and their biggest loss is a respectable 14-16 (which they have managed 3 times this season). A fairly consistent season saw them ease their way into playoffs contention and good results in their final two matches allowed them to take top spot in the regular season.
.
Players:
Reno:
One of the long term members of this team, Reno is a very consistent player, always reliable to perform to his ability in big time matches. A strong player with rifles, reno is a very good support player backing up his teammates and working well for the team. A decent start to the playoffs with average performances in the teams first two matches, reno will be an important part of his teams success in the grand final with his good brain and unselfish play.
.
Vrostien: The rider, the big man coming across to this team just before WGT last year has good fragging ability and is able to catch opposition off guard if they are not careful. Unfortunately we have yet to see this ability in the playoffs with some relatively poor performances so far in the playoffs. Having said that, this is not a player to be underestimated by any means and when he is on fire, he can prove very hard to stop.
.
Digz: Another long term member of the team, Digz is a very strong player, using his sharp reflexes to take out opponents before they know what’s happened. Digz can make a difference by creating entries to the bombsites for his team as well as pulling off necessary kills to help his team win important rounds.
.
Mike: Known to most as snakewOw, a player with a controversial past, especially with accusations around him of cheating in CS 1.6 and CS:S in the past. However he has proven to his critics that he is a very talented player with extremely sharp aim and smarts too match. Joining the team from 1.6 after AINC for the CEVO season, Mike has shown himself to be a valuable pickup, topping the stats with most kills in the last 2 playoff matches for his team. Heads up to opposition, inside word is Mike has a new pc so he won’t have to deal with sub 50 fps any longer.
.
Kermit: The kermDAWG, known for his big deagle and AWP skills and his famous donut in the semi final of AINC against Sydney Underground. A talented player that joined this team after being rejected by tournament admins in trying to join an intermediate team. He has proven himself to be an excellent addition to the lineup, getting important kills and locking down bombsites with his sharp aim.
.
My Thoughts:
This team definitely has the the individual skill to match it with any other team in Australia on their day, however tactically they may be lacking in comparison to their opponents. Although they have already beaten Sydney Underground this season, this is a much harder task. They will need to work together and make most of their shots to try and shutdown their opposition. The advantage they have is in the fact they have had a stable lineup over the past few weeks and have pracced up hard. The team will also be holding a lot of confidence with their convincing win over Sequential Gaming in the semi final. If their opponents underestimate this team even slightly, they can make them pay dearly with their tight and in your face playing style.
.
Sydney Underground
.
Lineup:

  • Azad “topgun” Orami
  • Brett “Tegs” Bednarski
  • Scott “Boomser” Bednarski (c)
  • Oliver “Huk” Johnson-Barrett
  • Chad “Spunj” Burchill
  • Reserve: Ben “Racs” Thomas

2nd Regular Season - Wins:12 Losses:3 Rounds Won:235 Rounds Lost:125
.
History:
The team originally formed under the old immineNt name in a bid for selection to the CGS. A wealth of experience and talent in this lineup, this year has seen them be undefeated at Reloaded LAN 08, undefeated AINC champions and also undefeated at the CGS Pan Asian Finals in Wuhan, China last month, this team is the benchmark for CS:S in Australia. The team with the recent addition of Spunj after Gamerthon has proven dominant on LAN not losing a match so far this year. Online has however been a different story. The team has been fairly inconsistent of late with very little prac due to other commitments for teammates on their return from China.
.
A poor start to the CEVO season with 3 surprise losses in their first 6 matches seeing them languish around the middle of the standings. However a very strong finish to the season saw them take 2nd spot behind Exile 5 in the overall standings at the end of the regular season. Their lack of practice on certain maps and with MR15 rules has meant they have battled their way through the playoffs to the grand final. Now with their full lineup back in action they will be looking to show Australia their full talent that they can produce on LAN.
.
Players:
Topgun: One of the biggest pure fraggers in Australian CS:S history, topgun has the ability to turn around a match with a big play that will demoralise the opposition. Very strong in attack and offence, there are very few weaknesses to expose in topgunsgame. His performance is crucial to his teams result, because if the guns aren’t firing on topgun, there are very big shoes to fill.
.
Tegs: A strong team player, he showed on his return to the team in the semi final that his role in the team is a vitally important one. Tegs has the ability to shut down an area of a map on his own, with his own style of play that is very hard to match, he can prove a tough customer for opposition teams.
.
Boomser: The main brains of this team. He has the ability to change the match with smart plays and good team communication. He can motivate his team when they are all down and out and really stabilizes the sometime random and aggressive plays his team are known to do from time to time. A very strong player in his own right he can pull off strong shots which shut down opposition advances effectively.
.
Huk: A very accurate player with both rifles and AWP, Huk is a good all round player. He is good used as an entry fragger to clear out a bombsite and can be relied upon to hold major choke points on almost any map. Although being the least experienced player in the team, Huk still has 2 CS:S Nationals titles and international experience over the past couple of years.
.
Spunj: The most recent addition to the Underground lineup, spunj proved his worth at the recent Asian Championships for CGS and also in the past 2 CEVO matches where he has performed consistently, fulfilling his role in the team and doing his part to help Underground to the Grand Final.
.
My Thoughts:
On paper this team is much stronger than their opposition, however their lack of any sort of decent practice will make this match hard work for them. This is the time however, for Underground to show to the Australian public why they are one of the most, if not the most dominant team for CS:S in Australia and Asia. This is the match where they show they can be as dominant online as they are on LAN. When this team is on song they are near impossible to beat on any map, even maps they don’t practice for CGS. The team has had a tough run in the playoffs so far, losing to sequential in the first round of playoffs and only narrowly beating them in overtime in the semi-final. They are going to have to bring their A game to this match if they want to come away with a victory.
.
Predictions
Here are my predicted scores for the following maps;

  • De_Dust2: SU 16 > X5 11
  • De_Train: X5 16 > SU 12
  • De_Inferno: X5 16 > SU 14
  • De_Nuke: SU 16 > X5 10

This is going to be a very tight match, I’ve tipped Exile 5 on Train and Inferno as I have seen their form on inferno being very strong and hard for SU to beat and knowing SU are weak on train, I don’t see them beating Exile5 on that map either. Sydney Underground are my picks for Nuke and Dust 2, both maps they know very well and have strong holds for which I don’t think Exile 5 have enough tactical depth to counter.

CEVO INTERMEDIATE FINAL - POWAH VS. ZERO REMORSE

.
After 10 and a half weeks, it all comes to an end this Thursday at 7:30 PM as we see Powah take on Zero Remorse for the title of CEVO Intermediate champions and claim the $1000 in prize money on offer for the winning team. Striking the Scene is proud to have the opportunity to be there in the match, calling all of the action live for all the spectators. Make sure you stay tuned to www.strikingthescene.com for details to listen in on a whole range of coverage including pre and post game interviews, and not to forget round by round action live from the game itself.
.
Here, I have taken the time to look how both teams have faired during the season and their chances in the final. I have also done a player by player analysis for both teams giving readers and spectators a deeper insight into both teams…….
.

POWAH
.
Line-up:

  • Tom “etriC” Davey
  • Josh “sKopeD” Hall
  • James “SubNoize” Hall
  • Mitch “rdm” Fordham
  • Jeremy “jemske” King
  • Daniel “Gummerz” Baker

.
4th Place Regular Season – Wins :11 - Losses:4 - Rounds Won:205 - Rounds Lost:155
.
History:

Powah are a side that have taken every opportunity that has come their way. Starting as a low-tier Sydney LAN side in mid/late 07 they have worked their way up through the ranks to where they are now. Their determination and will to succeed and to achieve their potential is undoubtable. One of the few teams to have the fortunate chance of competing in the FFYI competition for a spot in the Intermediate competition, they have definitely silenced their critics.
.
The addition of Gummerz and Jemske before the start of the regular season has worked wonders and given the team the experience and cool heads needed to counter the rest of their somewhat unpredictable members. A strong start to the season, winning 7 of their first 8 games, filled the team with the confidence they needed and set them up in a strong position for the playoffs. A lacklustre, in comparison, finish to the season however saw them with 2 losses and 3 forfeit wins in their last 5 matches of the regular season.
.
Players:
Etric:
The team captain and founder. A strong player in his own right but his main strength is in his leadership of his team. A sharp player with the AWP, his main time to shine is on Powah’s CT side where he is a very tough customer to get past. Equally, he also has the ability to gain important kills when the team is in offence and set up rounds for the rest of his team to complete, a skill that is overlooked in many players.
.
Skoped: The wildcard. Skoped is one of those players who border on the line that separates stupidity with brilliance. His fragging capabilities are undeniable, however this can also seem to be his downfall as he can, at times, jeopardize the team’s effort in search for those big kills. He is a player that can change the balance of any match with big picks in tight situations, which has been the key to the teams’ success in various matches past.
.
SubNoize: Like his aforementioned brother, SubNoize can also be the wildcard. Not often one to top the scoring or shine as the player of the match or tournament, his value to the team is that he can break the opposition with strong picks and equally strong holds. His downside is when he is not on song he looks a player that seems unable to make an impact on a match.
.
Rdm: The shining light, in my opinion, for Powah so far in the playoffs. A somewhat underrated player, Rdm has the ability to hold the team together and get important rounds when the rest of the team is being rendered useless by the opposition. This was best seen in the round 2 playoffs match between Powah and 403 on nuke. With strong aim and a decent brain Rdm can help his team get through tough rounds.
.
Gummerz: The most experienced member of the side, Gummerz has played with some of the best players in Australian CS:S today. His experience is invaluable to this side, it allows the other members of the team to take risks knowing that Gummerz is there to back them up or finish off the round. He has the ability to slow the game down in defence by shutting down a bombsite or an area of a map effectively.
.
Jemske: Another experienced and talented player. The ever lovable Jemske has the uncanny ability to pull of the big play at the right time. A player which at times can be unnoticed for his contribution to a match, Jemske doesn’t take the spotlight much but when he does it is always that little extra special. More often than not however, he is most likely to be contributing with consistent frags which help the team invaluably.
.
My Thoughts:
This team has a tough task to overcome against Zero Remorse having lost to them on both occasions these two teams have met this season. Powah will need to use the lessons learnt from these 2 losses to build up a strategy that will work against a strong opponent. Their ability to adapt to the Zero Remorse style of play on the day will be the key to their success. This is going to take good leadership and a sharp, quick thinking mind from somewhere within this team to implement and change a game plan that will lead to their victory. The team cannot rely on pure aim to beat an opponent such as Zero Remorse and will need some of their more unpredictable players to start working for the team rather for their own statistics.
.

ZERO REMORSE
.
Line-up:

  • Matthew “mrt” Lacrombe
  • Ben “s0j
  • Ash “d3tty” Ley
  • Tim “AfrikaKorps” Ward
  • Nick “MacL3od” MacLeod
  • Mitch “giant” Janke

.
6th Place Regular Season – Wins:10 - Losses:5 - Rounds Won:222 - Rounds Lost:169
.
History:
In one way or another, over the past 2 to 3 years, a team from Zero Remorse has been fielded and competing at a reasonably high level in Australian CS:S. Starting the season as one of the favourites, the side encountered many bumps and roadblocks on their way to where they are now, contenders for the Intermediate crown. One of the main players in the competitive Melbourne LAN scene, there is no lack of experience or talent in this line-up. With a rejuvenated line-up and a steely determination not seen from this side until the playoffs, Zero Remorse has been nearly impossible to stop on their run to the Grand Final. A fairly average regular season saw this team just scrape into the playoffs in very bizarre circumstances. Their win in the last round of the regular season, coincidentally against their upcoming opponents, proved vital.
.
The amount of practice the team has put in since they stabilised their line-up has showed strong performances in all three playoff matches to date has put them as arguable favourites for the final. Their current line-up is a good mix of experience and up and coming talent, the two long-term ZR members in s0j and ak (afrikakorps) compliment the vibrancy and talent of the rest of their line-up nicely.
.
Players:
.
Mrt: Rarely do you see a player with as much dedication or passion as mrt. Whether you decide to see this as a good thing or to use it as a mockery, it is undoubtable that the effort he has put into his game in recent times has definitely paid off. He has shown himself as a strong player with the ability to pull of even the most unlikely of plays, a match winner with a decent brain and good aim. His major downside however is his temperament. His inability to keep in his frustrations can be distracting to the rest of his team and in turn make it hard for the team to come back from a losing position.
.
S0j: One of two players in this line-up from last years ZR team which won the Intermediate competition, s0j is an experienced player that is often underestimated by other teams. He is the player that you don’t really point out as a danger man yet before you know it he has pulled out a tally of kills that puts his team in a near unbeatable position.
.
D3tty: A strong player which has really made a difference in this revitalized line-up. Shown to be a very tough customer to stop once he has set himself up for a big match, strong on defence with smart plays and clever positioning which can see his area of the map nearly inaccessible to the opposition. His major downside is his lack of offensive flair, sometimes he has a tendency to play too much of a passive game leaving him weak to a smart opposition.
.
AK: The second of last seasons winning ZR side. Ak is a player that is known for his fragging ability and is a danger to any opposition. He has the ability to obliterate an opposition in only a few rounds with big shots and strong plays that can demoralise any opposition, leaving them vulnerable for the rest of the half or entire match. On the other hand, if he doesn’t manage to get himself off to a good start it can lead to the other team exposing his weaknesses.
.
Macleod: This is the real wildcard element for Zero Remorse. He can be the match winner that dominates an opposition, especially in defence, by shutting down anything in his path. A very aggressive player, his strong point is his ability to be in the face of the opposition at all times leaving them very little time to recover. He can however be left very susceptible against a smart opposition that can render him useless for most of the match.
.
Giant: The most solid player in this line-up. Giant, much like jemske for Powah, is the one that can be relied on for that consistency in any match situation. A smart player with good aim, he can be a very tough customer to deal with for opposition teams. His ability to continually stop or slow down an opposition in attack or defence by doing the little things that count the most in helping his team to victory.
.
Final Thoughts;
This team must be confident after their strong performance to date in the playoff series. Adding to that confidence is the fact that they have beaten Powah on the last 2 occasions both teams met in CEVO. A more experienced team in big match situations as a whole compared to their opposition, they are going to prove difficult to beat. If, however, the opposition can find a way to make in roads early, the team can tend to break away from its game plan and fall away for the rest of the match.

This team needs a strong start. If they do start off strong the momentum will prove next to impossible for Powah to stop. They have the mix of big fragging power with Macleod and Ak along with the consistency and reliability of Giant and s0j. D3tty and mrt are both match winners in their own right, but expect them to simply play the role best suited to the teams’ situation but not to forget their ability to clutch in tough situations for the team.
.
Predictions:
.
Weighing up both teams and having played and watched both teams play on various occasions, here are my predictions for the following maps:

  • De_dust2: ZR 16 > Powah 14
  • De_train: ZR 16 > Powah 9
  • De_nuke: ZR 16 > Powah 13
  • De_Inferno: ZR 16 > Powah 10

.
As you can see, I expect Zero Remorse to take out the Best of 3 maps final. I just see them as having the edge over Powah having beaten them twice recently and with their outstanding form during the playoff series. Their experience and firepower should prove too much for Powah too handle. However deep down I do hope that Powah can pull of a win for the SydCSS community over those damn Melbournians.
